ChatGPT Widget for Home Screen on Android

At a time when virtual assistants are becoming more ubiquitous, OpenAI brings new conveniences to Android device users via a ChatGPT widget. Through this new widget on the home screen, users can interact with ChatGPT via text, voice or images to start a conversation or ask for information.

Last year, OpenAI launched its own ChatGPT app for iOS and Android platforms, facilitating conversations with this virtual assistant. Now, industry sources reveal that there are plans for significant improvements focused on the use of ChatGPT on Android smartphones.

According to Mishaal Rahman, an Android tech expert quoted by The Verge, the ChatGPT app with version 1.2024.052 introduces a new ChatGPT widget of size 4 x 2. This widget offers four essential shortcuts: text, camera, image and voice query , allowing users to access these features directly from the home screen of their Android device. However, it remains unclear whether this widget will also be available for iOS devices.

While the new feature hasn't been officially released on the Google Play Store yet and appears to be currently in a beta phase, enthusiasts can still test it out by downloading it separately.

For those interested in trying out the new ChatGPT widget for the Android home screen, there is an important caveat: certain features, such as camera queries and image search, are only available to subscribers to the paid plan of the ChatGPT app, known as ChatGPT Plus. With a monthly cost of $20, this premium plan offers general access to ChatGPT even during busy periods, faster response times, and priority access to new features and improvements.

ChatGPT has established itself as a major player in the virtual assistant arena, competing directly with Google's Gemini. Interestingly, ChatGPT was present on the Android platform even before Gemini (formerly Bard) made its appearance. Recently, Google released a standalone app for Gemini. However, the Gemini AI imaging tool was recently suspended due to issues with the accuracy of the representation of people.
